Is taking and becoming certified as an EEO investigator or Counselor a good idea for

everyone?

No—and we want to be transparent about that. EEO investigations and Counseling requires objectivity, attention to detail, emotional maturity, and a genuine commitment to fairness. This is not a side hustle or a quick path to a high income. If you are looking for fast money, easy certification, or are unprepared to engage with sensitive and often complex workplace issues, this is not the right course for you. Our training is built for professionals serious about conducting legally sound, ethical investigations that impact real people and workplaces. If that resonates with you, you are in the right place. If not, we encourage you to consider other paths better aligned with your goals.

Who creates and delivers your EEO training?

Our EEO Investigator and Counselor training is built on the standards established by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), with a strong focus on the procedures outlined in Management Directive 110 (MD-110). The course is structured to align with the expectations commonly used by federal agencies, contractors, and private employers.

The training is developed by professionals with extensive experience conducting EEO investigations across federal, private, and academic settings. Our team brings both practical insight and up-to-date knowledge of the EEO process, ensuring the course reflects real-world investigative practices.

Brownwill Solutions is also a verified Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), offering a unique perspective on both public- and private-sector compliance environments.

Is EEO Investigations and EEO Counseling a work-from-home job?

Yes, in most cases, EEO investigations can be performed remotely. Most agencies and companies allow investigators to work from home, reviewing documents, conducting interviews, and writing reports virtually. While a small number of agencies may occasionally request on-site work, those opportunities are rare, and accepting them is entirely at your discretion.

Are EEO Investigators and EEO Counselors like attorneys?

No. EEO Investigators are not attorneys and do not need a law degree to do this work. Their role is to serve as neutral fact-finders who gather evidence, conduct interviews, and compile a thorough and unbiased Report of Investigation (ROI) based on the claims raised.

Unlike attorneys, EEO Investigators do not represent either party, argue cases, or provide legal advice. However, they are expected to understand key legal concepts—such as discrimination, harassment, and retaliation—and follow the procedural requirements outlined in federal regulations like 29 C.F.R. § 1614 and EEOC Management Directive 110 (MD-110).

Do EEO Investigators only work with government agencies?

Not at all. While many EEO Investigators do work with federal, state, and local government agencies, there is also strong demand in the private sector. Any organization—public or private—that employs staff is responsible for addressing workplace discrimination, harassment, and retaliation complaints. Whether or not a company has a dedicated human resources department, they are still legally obligated to respond to these issues, and that is where an investigator comes in. From corporations to universities to nonprofit organizations, EEO Investigators are needed across a wide range of industries.

How are the EEO Investigator and EEO Counselor Certification Courses Conducted?

Both the EEO Investigator and EEO Counselor certification courses are fully self-paced and online. You can start anytime and move through the material at your own speed, with no deadlines or scheduled sessions. This allows you to study around your current work, family, or personal commitments. Once enrolled, you will have full access to all modules, quizzes, and downloadable materials.

Do I need to attend live classes or webinars?

No. These courses are entirely self-guided. There are no live classes or mandatory webinars to attend.

How soon will I find work after becoming certified as an EEO Investigator and/or EEO Counselor,  and when will I get paid?

It depends. EEO investigation is not a “quick cash” type of job, but for those who are consistent and professional, it can lead to steady, high-volume work over time. Some investigators secure assignments within a few weeks, while for others it may take longer, depending on agency needs, your outreach efforts, and how well you present yourself as reliable and detail-oriented. Pay varies by contract and complexity, but most investigators earn between $1200-$1800 per case, with higher rates possible for multi-issue complaints or certain agencies. Most companies pay within 30 to 45 days of case completion, though timelines can vary slightly.

Can I work on as many cases as I want?

As an independent contractor, yes—you have the flexibility to take on as many cases as you can manage, provided you deliver quality work and meet deadlines. Your ability to secure multiple assignments will depend on your efficiency, professionalism, and the availability of cases from agencies or contracting firms. The more reliable and consistent you are, the more opportunities you are likely to receive.

What do I need to get started?

To begin working as an EEO Investigator, you must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, and have access to a computer, reliable internet, and a phone. Most importantly, you need the discipline, professionalism, and motivation to do the work. If you meet these basic requirements and are ready to learn, you are well on your way.

Why is it necessary for companies to hire an EEO Investigator?

A designated EEO Investigator ensures that discrimination and harassment claims are handled promptly, fairly, and impartially. It helps to create a safe and inclusive work environment where employees feel respected and valued.
